The Aegean Region

Heredotus, the father of history, claimed that the Aegean coast is the most beautiful and has the best climate in the
world. The bays and peninsulas, coves and golden beaches that stretch the length of these beautiful shores certainly
substantiate this claim. Countless events of mythology took place in this region and visitors will encounter the theatres,
temples and agoras of ancient cities at almost every turn. Ephesus, one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world,
Troy, immortalized by Homer, and Pergamum, the art and cultural centre and capital city of one of the most powerful
kingdoms of the day, are all located in this part of Turkey. The Aegean Region is also home to some of Turkey’s leading
beach resorts, including the ever-popular Marmaris, Bodrum and Ö Deniz with its famous Blue Lagoon. The region is served by three international Airports: Izmir to the north, Bodrum and Dalaman, which is used by those
travelling as far east as the resorts of Kalkan and Kas in the Mediterranean Region.
Highlights of the Aegean Region

The North Aegean
Situated on the southern coast of the Edremit Bay at the meeting point of the health-giving springs of Ak;ay and a
fragrant pine forest, is the small resort of Ayvalik. The town is renowned for its olive oil production and accordingly
the area has become known as the "Olive-grove Riviera". Travelling south, the next resort of note is Fo;a, famous for the
heroic Turkish sailors based here. Historic sites include a Genoese fortress and small ancient theatre. The ancient sites
ofTroy and Pergamum are located in the North Aegean.

Izir and Surroundings
Located on the bay of the same name, Izmir is a modern city brimming with life. It is also a bustling commercial centre
and shopping in its busy markets is a shopaholics idea of paradise. The peninsula of ;esme with its brilliant waters,
superb beaches and thermal springs lies to the west of Izmir. Sardis, the capital of the wealthy Lydian king, Croesus, can
be reached by way of a short inland diversion. The bustling port of Kusadasi is one the most established of Turkey’s beach
resorts. Pigeon Island.

Ephesus
Among the most famous cities of the ancient world, Ephesus was one of the most significant cities of the Roman era. A
treasury of all the riches of Ionian culture, Ephesus had a reputation for philosophy and critical thinking. The Temple of
Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, as well as countless statues, theatres, libraries, markets and
smaller temples were all architectural symbols of the city's fame. The city is incredibly well-preserved and the most
prominent remnants of the bygone era are the imposing Library of Celcius and the impressive ancient theatre.

Further to the south you will see the ancient city of Priene, built according to a geometric plan designed by the great
architect of Miletus, Hippodamos. Miletus was a great centre of commerce and thought in the ancient world and important
developments, scientific and otherwise, took place here. The nearby Didyma, though not one of the ancient cities, is still
famous for its magnificent temple dedicated to Apollo, the impressive ruins of which can still be explored today. Nearby
is the popular resort of Altinkum, best known for its long, sandy beach.

Pamukkale and Aphrodisias
On the Izmir-Antalya road, Aphrodisias (Geyre) was an important cultural and art centre famous for its training in
sculpture. On the same road is found the iconic Pamukkale.. The plentiful calcium-rich thermal waters flowing out of the
mountain have, over time, created extraordinary rock formations and Pamukkale or “cotton castle” is an unmissable
attraction. Here one may take a bath in the health-giving waters while gazing at this natural phenomenon, which is
unparalleled in world geography. The ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis lie behind this calcium terraced mountain.

The South Aegean
The South Aegean is the most popular part of Turkey for UK holidaymakers and the area boasts a range fantastic beach
resorts. First up is the pretty, white-washed harbour town of Bodrum. The mausoleum of King Mausolos one of the seven
wonders of the ancient world and was located here, although very little of the structure remains. Lively Gümbet and the
windsurfers haven of Bitez are perhaps the best known of the beach resorts in the area. Further along the Peninsula,
sleepy hamlets sit side-by-side with fishing villages that have been transformed into upmarket resorts, popular holiday
hants of the Turkish rich and famous.

Marmaris, with its modern marina surrounded by its lush mountains and hills, is an alluring holiday getaway. It has
everything you would expect to find in a modern resort, hundreds of shops and restaurants and plenty of bars and discos to
keep night owls occupied. The best beaches however are a little further away. I;meler is a firm family favourite which in
addition to its beach also boasts a couple of aquaparks. Turun; and Dat;a are an altogether more laidback holiday prospect
and a world away from the hustle of bustle of Marmaris itself.
Next along is Dalyan, home of the much-photographed rock tombs and famous mud baths. The protected Iztuzu beach is a
nesting ground to the endangered caretta caretta turtle and development here is strictly controlled.

Visitors to Fethiye too can marvel at Lycian Rock Tombs, the most impressive of which is the Tomb of King Amintas which
overlooks this pretty harbour town. Ö Deniz is without a doubt the most famous of the beaches in the area, with it’s
stunning blue lagoon and the nearby resorts of Hisarönü and Ovacik cater specifically for tourists with a wide range of
accommodation and choice of shops, restaurants and bars.

Fethiye is a bustling harbour town situated on the southern Aegean Coast. The Town’s picturesque setting and proximity to
the stunning blue lagoon of Ö Deniz make Fethiye and its resorts an ideal holiday destination.
Fethiye Town Centre is positioned on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos. Remains of the city are scattered around
the town, including rock tombs and Lycian sarcophagi. On the hill that rises to the south of Fethiye there are the ruins
of a castle built by the knights of St John in the 15th Century. A more recent discovery is the Telmessos Theatre, built
in the early Roman period and excavated only since 1994. Paspatur, the “old town”, is home to buildings from the Ottoman
era: the Eski Cami (Old Mosque) built in 1791 and the Hamam (Turkish Bath).

As well as a rich history, Fethiye boasts an attractive harbour, a colourful bazaar, numerous restaurants, shops and a
handful of bars. Comprehensive and regular local minibus services (dolmus) run between the town centre and all of the
nearby resorts and major attractions.

Ö Deniz translates as “Dead Sea”, the name given to the resort on account of the shallow, calm and crystal clear waters
of its lagoon. It is a designated protected area, which means that development around the lagoon itself is prohibited.
There is a small charge to enter the lagoon area, with proceeds going towards its upkeep and preservation. Despite its
popularity, the resort has a laid-back atmosphere, with a selection of hotels, restaurants, shops and bars nestled between
the public beach and the mountains. In addition to the famed paragliding, there is also a variety of water sport
activities available such as parasailing and windsurfing.

Hisarönü and Ovacik, 9km from the town centre and set in the foothills of Mount Babadag, are popular bases for visitors to
the Fethiye area. Both provide ample accommodation and facilities to meet the needs of tourists and in particular,
Hisarönü comes to life at night. Being in an elevated position, these resorts are slightly cooler in temperature and
provide welcome respite from the high-season heat of Fethiye town centre and Ö Deniz.

Kaya Köyü (Kaya Village), 15km from Fethiye and 4km from Hisarönü by dolmus, is the largest late-medieval “ghost town” in
Asia Minor. Kaya or Karmylassos was home to a sizeable Greek community until the population exchange agreement in 1923.
Incredibly, the remains of around three thousand deserted buildings, including houses, shops, churches and schools are
scattered across the hillside. Largely untouched by tourism, the centre of Kaya has a limited number of guesthouses and
traditional cafés/restaurants.

Deniz, but as far a field as Patara, Dalaman and even the Greek island of Rhodes on a clear day. Expect to pay around £60

Butterfly Valley is a lush canyon, home to several species of butterfly, the most notable of which is the Jersey
Tiger. The Valley is most easily accessed via boat from Ö Deniz. Although development is prohibited, there are basic
camping and restaurant facilities.

44km from Fethiye, the spectacular Saklikent gorge carved from Mount Akdag stretches an incredible 18km into the
rock face. It is possible to walk through the gorge for a small charge, however, you first need to negotiate the walk
through the strong stream of feezing cold water from the Gök;esu/Ulupinar springs. Alternatively, take a waterside table
at a neighbouring café and watch the more adventurous swimming in the springs!

Bodrum

Province: Mugla
Region: Aegean
Airport: Bodrum Milas
Resorts: Bodrum, Gümbet, Bitez, Ortakent, Turgutreis, Torba, Türkbükü und Gölköy, Yalikavak, Gümüsk.
Transfer Time: 30-45 minutes (Depending on resort)

The Aegean town and yachting port of Bodrum is one of Turkey's longest established resorts. It boasts world-class
facilities including it's own airport, and a wealth of history, most notably the Mausoleum of Halicarnassos, one of the
seven wonders of the ancient world. The main resort itself has long been a favourite holiday destination of the Turkish
elite and as such, there is a vibrant nightlife scene. The close-by resort of Gümbet is also famed for its discos and
bars. In contrast, the Bodrum peninsula offers a calmer alternative: a shore line characterised by charming fishing
villages with whitewashed houses, crystal clear water and a welcoming breeze.

A sizeable resort in it's own right despite being only 2km from Bodrum, Gümbet is known for it's lively nightlife and
long sandy beach. As well as an abundance of tourist accommodation, Gümbet has plenty of restaurants, cafes, and a
selection of bars and discos in line with the resort's increasing popularity. During the day, the resort's main point of
focus is the beach, where you can relax and soak up the sun, or take advantage of the water sports on offer.

A little further along the coast, Bitez is an altogether more laidback alternative. The resort lies 7 km west of Bodrum,
and has become a firm favourite with water sports enthusiasts on account of it's favourable weather conditions. In
particular, windsurfing and dinghy sailing are popular activities. The village centre is located inland and remains
largely untouched by tourism. The surrounding area is therefore perfect for a pleasant stroll through fragrant mandarin
groves. Bitez is within easy reach of Bodrum, with minibuses departing for the resort from the main bus station every 20
to 30 minutes.

Bryony Villas provide the very best in luxury apartments in and arond Oludeniz beach resort. The accommodation, rooms, furnishings, equipment, swimming pool, furniture, building, apartment, rental apartment, Turkey rental villa, property in Turkey, overseas property, rent apartment, Turkey villas, holiday villas, rent, villas, rentals, rent a villa in Turkey, book a Turkish holiday, villa online, holidaying in Turkey, Villa holidays in Turkey, Turkey villa holidays, luxury villa holiday rentals, villa accommodation, self catering villa, olu deniz, oludeniz, ovacik, kayakoy, kaya village, hisaronu, fethiye. We offer the best and our booking service and on site help is superb.

Continuing westwards along the peninsula, Ortakent and Yahsi occupy the next bay. Ortakent lays claim to the Peninsula's
longest beach and so perhaps unsurprisingly, the beach has become popular with families and locals. In spite of it's
popularity, Ortakent retains it's relaxed atmosphere. The majority of accommodation is positioned slightly inland and
consists primarily of small hotels, whilst there is also an assortment of shops, cafes and restaurants handy. As well as
it's lengthy beach, the area is known for the fertility of it's soil and the ensuing abundance of olive, fig and mandarin
trees. In terms of history, Ortakent is home to some seventeenth century "Arpranga" house. These two storey structures
were built by the Greeks for defence purposes and are today safeguarded by a heritage protection order.

Turgutreis, a small town on the western tip of the peninsula, is named after the famous Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis, a
statue of whom occupies a prime spot in the town-centre. As with it's neighbours Gümbet and Bitez, Turgutreis is a haven
for windsurfers and there is a small stretch of beach for those wishing to enjoy the uninterrupted sunshine and clear blue
sea at a more leisurely pace. The town is popular with Turkish holiday makers and second home owners and as a result,
Turgutreis has its own dedicated bus station with connections not only to Bodrum but also to places as far a field as
Istanbul and Ankara. There are numerous hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as the town's weekly market which takes
place on a Saturday.

Torba is situated north of Bodrum, on the northern shores on the peninsula. This quiet little enclave benefits from milder
winds and as a result, the surrounding area is somewhat greener than it's southern neighbours. Although there are little
in the way of beaches in Torba, the sea is shallow, clean and excellent for swimming. Torba's historic past is evident
from the ruins of a Byzantine Monestary dating back to the 4th or 5th century situated on the east side of the bay. A
regular ferry service departs from here to the resort of Didim, with it's famed Temple of Apollo, further along the Aegean
coast.

The laid-back fishing village of Türkbükü and the adjacent village of Gölköy have recently been merged into a single
municipality and are often referred to now as Göltürkbükü. Situated in the greenest part of the Peninsula, the villages
nestle on a sheltered bay east of Yalikavak, 20 km from Bodrum. Göltürkbükü is like many of the villages along the
Peninsula, a favoured holiday spot of the Turkish rich and famous. There are several shore-side restaurants, many of which
ve their own jetties for sunbathing during the day, and atmospheric dining by moon and candle light come the evening.
Accommodation here ranges from modest pensions to luxury boutique hotels.

Gündogan was formerly known as Farilya and the various Bronze Age ceramics, milling stones and stone axes found in a
earby cave are testament to the fact that here lay one of the earliest human settlements on the Peninsula. Although the
beach here is narrow, it is fairly long, sandy and there is space aplenty for the sun loungers that nestle alongside the
cool, clear water. Facilities for tourists include a choice of hotels, shops, restaurants and bars.

The landscape of the small but bustling town of Yalikavak, formerly the area's main sponge fishing port, is nowadays
identifiable by the windmills that have become symbolic of the Bodrum area. Although the beach here is of little
significance compared to those of neighbouring resorts, Yalikavak is within easy reach of several coves more suited to
bathing. There is an attractive, bustling harbour, brought to life by local fishermen and passing yachts, as well as a
sizeable selection of hotels, bars and eateries in the town centre. The town successfully manages to combine rustic charm
with high quality tourist facilities.

Gümüsk is a sleepy seaside village, which partly occupies the site of the ancient harbour city of Myndos. The
semi-submerged remains of the settlement can be seen to the north west of the village. Because of it's links with
antiquity, Gümüsk has benefited immensely from strictly enforced building regulations and has thus far managed to retain
it's original charm. The village is said to boast the best fish restaurants of the Bodrum Peninsula and the laidback
evenings here revolve around these pretty waterside eateries. There is a small island which separates Gümüsk's two
sheltered bays, known locally as Tavsan Adasi or "Rabbit" Island on account of it's sizeable rabbit population.

Akyarlar, the Peninsula's southernmost resort is just 5 kilometres from the Greek island of Kos. The resort's most notable
attraction is the sandy, crescent-shaped beach which is popular with bathers and windsurfers alike. Since tourist
accommodation is limited to camping and small hotels, Akyarlar maintains a tranquil air.

Things to Do In and Around Bodrum:

Halicarnassos Mausoleum is Bodrum's oldest and most significant antiquity, given it's status as one of the seven
wonders of the ancient world. The Mausoleum was built by Artemisia II in honour of her husband King Mausolos and it is
indeed this name from which the word "mausoleum" is derived . In it's entirety, the structure stood at over 50 metres in
height. Reliefs from the Mausoleum, including frescos, were brought to the British Museum in London in 1846.

The Castle of St. Peter is without a doubt the most prominent feature of the Bodrum landscape. This impressive
structure dates back to the medieval knights of St. John, a catholic order which later became a military alliance that
acted as defenders of the Christian faith. Construction of the castle began in the 1400s, and the Knights made use of
materials from the tomb of King Mausolus. Interestingly, the exact stones taken from the site can today be identified by
their greenish tinge. A detailed description of the history of the Castle can be found on the Bodrum Bodrum website.
Today the Castle is home to the Underwater Museum, exhibits include an ancient shipwreck and various other antiquities
found in the area.

Bodrum Amphitheatre is another structure accredited to the reign of King Mausolus, although it wasn't fully
completed until the Roman era. Situated on the hillside over looking the resort, the theatre had a capacity in the region
of 13,000. The theatre has been diligently restored and today houses the September Festival.

Myndos Gate, a further relic from King Mausolus's time, is the most significant remaining part of the original
city wall. Located on the west side of the resort, this was one of two entrances to ancient Halicarnassus. The gate is

Milas/Mylasa was in it's day and important trade centre. Today evidence of it's ancient history include a Roman
tomb, a temple and a section of city wall. Situated north of Milas, Labranda was a site dedicated to Zeus and connected to
Mylasa by a 12km scared road. It occupies a prime hill-top location and the remains of the temple itself, an acropolis, a
4th century tomb, some Roman baths and a Byzantine Church have been identified.

Shopping lovers are spoilt for choice with Bodrum's many weekly markets. In the main resort, there is a fabric

if this wasn't enough, Bitez now hosts it's own flea market on the first Sunday of every month.

Why not take advantage of Bodrum's alluring coast line, crystal clear water and cooling breeze by going on a
daily boat trip, stopping off at secluded coves for a spot of sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling. Alternatively, in the

Marmaris

Province: Mugla
Region: Aegean
Airport: Dalaman (110km)
Resorts: Marmaris, I;meler, Dat;a, Turun;, Bozborun Peninsula, Selimiye, Akyaka.
Transfer Time: Approx. 1 hour 45 mins

The colourful, cosmopolitan seaside town of Marmaris is a popular resort in the Aegean region. Situated on a striking bay,
backed by rugged pine-clad mountains, Marmaris and the neighbouring resorts of I;meler and Dat;a have something to offer
everybody: from the nightlife and bustling shops in Marmaris town centre, to the tranquillity of the Bozburun Peninsula.

With an abundance of tourist accommodation, shops, restaurants, bars and even it's own "bar street", Marmaris Town Centre
is without a doubt the hub of the region. Much of the action is centred around the attractive harbour, also the point from
which many of the popular daily boat trips depart. Shopping is excellent, with bargains to be found on leather goods,
gold, carpets and clothing. Visits to the covered bazaar and the weekly market are a must. Marmaris has it's own popular
beach and there are also several more within easy reach by boat or by local minibus.

I;meler, just 8 km from Marmaris, is a quieter alternative. However, facilities are by no means limited and there are
numerous hotels, restaurants, shops and bars to cater for visitors to the resort. The pretty resort centre is littered
with palm and eucalyptus trees, giving I;meler a scenic appeal all of its own. I;meler is a haven for beach lovers, with
no fewer than three blue-flag awarded beaches in the near vicinity. As well as the obligatory boat trips, the resort is
also ideal for watersports and along with neighbouring resorts, it is a popular base for scuba diving.

Dat;a is located some 68km from Marmaris. Oxygen-rich air with many curative properties has for centuries drawn visitors
to this small corner of Turkey. Dat;a also enjoys an enviable climate of low humidity and cooling sea breezes. The town
itself is small, but has plenty of character and is home to a lively yacht harbour, with lots of restaurants and a good
choice of cafes, bars and shops. There is also a weekly market on a Saturday. Within reach of the resort is the ancient
city of Knidos, once home to an illustrious medical school and a statue of Aphrodite, so revered that it generated its own
cult. Although the site is still being excavated, remains of the Hellenistic theatre and two Byzantine basilicas are
perhaps the best preserved and most worthy of a visit.

Turun; was previously only accessible by sea. Despite recently improved access by road from Marmaris, the resort has
retained its traditional charm and it continues to be regarded as one of Turkey's best kept secrets. The pace of life in
Turun; is unhurried. It's pine-tree sheltered bay and handful of shops and restaurants lend the resort a feel of
intimacy. From time to time yachts casually drop anchor to let their passengers explore the bay and swim in the clear
waters of the blue-flagged beach. As well as the resort town of Marmaris, the impressive remains of Amos are within easy
reach. Dating back to hellenistic times, the ruins include a hillside amphitheatre, a temple and statue pedestals.

The Bozburun Peninsula, is well known by yacht owners and operators since it's beauty and tranquillity are ideally suited
to the laidback cruising lifestyle. The village of Bozburun itself is indeed where some of Turkey's best Gulets
(traditional Turkish wooden vessels) are built. On the edge of the Peninsula, the inland village of Sögüt hosts a lively
weekly market, predominantly frequented by locals. Also nearby are the ruins of the ancient settlement of Thyssanos. Head
out to Saranda Cove to marvel at the stunning views out to the Greek Island of Simi and sample local produce firsthand at
one of the traditional restaurants.

Selimiye is a small, tranquil fishing village with a handful of quay-side restaurants and a refreshingly unhurried pace of
life. A popular stop on the Bodrum-Marmaris Blue Cruise, Selimiye boasts calm, crystal-clear waters and a scattering of
historical sites including the remains of three castles from the ancient city of Hydas, as well as an observation tower,
built some 100 metres from the shore. 2km from Selimiye is the beautiful, fine sandy beach of Sig Liman.

Akyaka is another hidden gem of the Aegean coast, situated on the Gulf of Gökova. An area of outstanding natural beauty,
Akyaka occupies the site of a Carian town called Idyma which dates back to 330 BC. Evidence of Akyaka's ancient past
exits in the form of an assortment of rock tombs, cisterns and walls. However, the resort today is perhaps more famed for
its "Ula" architecture. A traditional, ornate style unique to the Mugla province, the architecture is held in such high
esteem that modern development is strictly regulated, ensuring that Akyaka maintains it's quaint charm. Sunbathers and
swimmers can enjoy Akyaka's long, sandy beach, while the nearby Azmak Stream is perfect for canoeing and a delicious meal
of freshwater fish at one of the waterside restaurants.
Thins to Do In and Around Marmaris:

Jeep Safaris offer visitors to Marmaris the perfect opportunity to explore the surrounding area. A typical
journey takes tourists through rambling woodlands and traditional Turkish villages before arriving at a secluded cove for
lunch and a cooling swim. Popular routes include the Bozburun Peninsula, Orhaniye, Turun;, Akyaka and Gökova.

A daily Boat Trip is one of the most pleasant ways of passing the day, visiting nearby coves and islands. A wide
choice of small and larger boats pick day trippers up typically at the main quay in the town centre opposite the
marketplace. Popular destinations include Cennet Adasi (Heaven Island), Turun; and Fosforlu Magara (Phosphorus Cave). At
night there are also “moonlight” boat tours.

Excellent shopping facilities in Marmaris are further boosted by the various weekly markets, the most sizeable of
which takes place on a Thursday in the town centre. There is also a weekly market in I;meler (Wednesdays).

A vsit to Atlantis Aquapark, open since 1997, is a great day out for all the family. There are slides for both
children and adults, as well as a large entertainment complex, which includes a disco and an amusement arcade.

The protected site of Cleopatra’s Island, located in the Gulf of Gökova, is located some 12km from the main
resort by road, followed by a 20 minute boat ride. The Island’s soft, white sand was reputed to have been imported from

Egypt to satisfy a whim of Cleopatra herself. A short walk inland brings you to the ruins of a small Roman amphitheatre
and a church.

Marmaris Fort, built in around 1545, was restored during the 1980s after having sustained extensive damage during
the First World War. The Fort, complete with its Archaeology Museum, has been open to the public since 1991. The museum is
open to visitors between the hours of 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-17.30 every day except Monday.

A journey by boat to the nearby Greek island of Rhodes is a popular excursion for those based in and around
Marmaris. Services run daily throughout the summer months, departing at around 9.30am and returning in the early evening.
The journey takes about an hour.

The Marmaris Yacht Festival takes place in late April/early May each year at the Netsel Marina. This year’s event
is scheduled for 27th April-1st May and festivities include a parade, concerts, boat show and maritime exhibitions and a
race organised by the Marmaris International Yacht Club. For further information on the Festival, please refer to the
International Maritime Festival 2005 website.

Ephesus & Kusadasi

Province: Aydin
Region: Aegean
Airport: Izmir
Transfer Time: 45 minutes - 1 hour

The Aegean town and yachting port of Kusadasi is one of Turkey's longest established resorts. Along with Istanbul, the
town is Turkey’s premier cruise stopping point primarily due to its proximity to Ephesus. Kusadasi boasts a wide range of
hotels, shops and restaurants along with a lively bar street. The main landmark here is Pigeon Island, attached to the
mainland by a causeway and with its very own 14th century fortress and small private beach. Shopaholics will not be
disappointed as there are a variety of markets held each week, the most notable of which are the food market on a Friday,
clothes market on Wednesday and the nearby Selcuk has its very own Saturday market.

There are numerous beaches to choose from in the area. Kadinlar Plaji or Ladies Beach has almost become a resort in its
own right and a significant proportion of holiday accommodation is located here. 5km from the resort centre, this sandy
beach is understandably popular with tourists and locals alike and is well served by frequent local buses. Long Beach is a
little bit further on, but equally easy to access. Those willing to travel a little further afield can enjoy relative
peace at one of the National Park beaches. Small, and mostly pebbled these secluded coves are a lot more laidback and
definitely worth the extra journey for those who are looking for a peaceful retreat away from the tourist hoards.

Things to Do in and Around Kusadasi:

The ancient city of Ephesus (Efes) needs little introduction as one of the best preserved examples of Roman life in
the World today. The City is thought to have been inhabited since around 3,000 B.C. and evidence of Roman, Byzantine,
Seljukian and Ottoman civilisations are still seen today. Ephesus was known for the cult of Cybele, the Anatolian
Fertility Goddess, and then later for Artemis, the Virgin Goddess for whom a temple was built. The Temple of Artemis is
one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Ephesus became an important trade centre on account of its proximity to the coast and it didn’t take long for it to
establish itself as the provincial capital of the Roman Empire. Ephesus became an even busier town which had great
commercial, trading and political prominence and with a population that reached around 250,000. A significant Christian
community also grew and the City was visited by St John the Evangelist in the 1st century and by St Paul between 51-53
A.D. It was also the venue of two Ecumenical Councils. The success of the City began to decline on account of problems
connected with the harbour, the main source of trade, The Cavster River was pushing silt up the harbour and the sea was
pushed back to Pamucak. In spite of efforts to dredge and rebuild the harbour, Ephesus lost its main source of wealth and
by the 6th century, it was uninhabitable.

Though part of Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis warrants a separate mention, having graced the original list of the
seven wonders of the ancient world. The Temple was rebuilt several times over history and it's latest form dates from the
3rd century B.C. The Temple was built in honour of the fertility Goddess Artemis and served as a point of both commercial
and religious interest, being visited by numerous merchants, tourists, and kings who paid tribute to the Goddess by
sharing their profits with her. Excavations at the site have uncovered gifts including gold statues, earrings, bracelets
and ther such artefacts.8km southwest of Sel;uk, Meryemana (Shrine of the Virgin Mary) is thought to be where the Virgin Mary died. A
German Nun in the 18th century reported visions of a small stone house in which the Virgin lived out her last days and the
descriptions were found to match this site exactly. The small stone house is now a chapel, and probably dates back to the
4th century, although the foundations are thought to be from the 1st century. The church has become an important part of
Christian history and it was honoured by a visit from the Pope in 1967.

The Cave of the Seven Sleepers is named in accordance with the legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus. Although
ns of the legend do vary, the basic story revolves around seven young Christians who during the time of Decius
(around 250 A.D.) took refuge in a cave to avoid persecution. Upon finding this hiding place, their pursuers then blocked
up the cave and subsequently reported their demise. However, the youths did not die, they fell asleep and awoke from their
slumber some 200 years later. The incident has been widely interpreted as a miracle and today the cave is a popular local
attraction. Excavations in 1927-28 found a church and hundreds of graves at the site, testament to the faith of people who
wanted to be buried on the site of this miracle.

The small town of Sel;uk has developed into a thriving tourist base, with a choice of cafes, restaurants and
pensions at visitors disposal.

The village of Sirince (Kirkince) built by the Greeks some 800 years ago, is perched attractively on a hillside
among fragrant fruit orchards. Located 7km from Sel;uk, Sirince is known for its old-fashioned stone houses with red tiled
roofs and traditional way of life. Hand-made lace and local wine production are the Village's main industries and sampling
these produce has become a pleasant diversion for visitors to the area. To cater for the increase in visitor numbers, a
handful of guest house, restaurants and shops have opened in the Village.

Bafa Lake is a perfect retreat for those looking to escape the crowds and activities such as bird watching, walking
and swimming can be enjoyed in these beautiful, natural surroundings. Situated at the foot of Mount Latmos, the Lake is
about 69km south of Kusadasi and is easily accessible by public transport, car or organised tour. The scenery here is
striking and there are a handful of lakeside cafes and restaurants from which visitors can enjoy the vista. The lake is
also a haven for wildlife and it is not uncommon to spot wild ducks, pelicans and water hens.

Around 30km south of Kusadasi, Dilek National Park was awarded its current status in the 1960s. The Park is a
popular picnic spot with locals and offers welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of resort life. Lush vegetation
including linden and chestnut trees shelter the bays and beaches of the Dilek Peninsula. The sandy I;meler beach attracts
the most visitors, but Kavakli and Karapinar are also worth a visit. Local minibuses (dolmus) leave for the Park at
regular intervals from the bus station in Kusadasi, opposite the Friday market.

Kusadasi's Aquaparks provide entertainment for children and big children alike. The Adaland park is among the
biggest of its kind in Europe, whilst Aqua Fantasy even boasts its own hotel for those who like to be based in the centre
of the action.

Miletus is another structure which dates to the reign of King Mausolus, although it wasn't fully completed until
the Roman era. Situated on the hillside over looking the resort, the theatre had a capacity in the region of 13,000. It
has been diligently restored and today houses the September Festival.

Priene was a Greek settlement of some regard, formerly a harbour city and one of the twelve colonies which
formed the Ionian Confederation. Due to it's location on a flood plain, constant silting of the river has resulted in the
sea receding and over the years, Priene has become separated from the coast by some distance. The design of the city was
modelled on that of Athens, with streets in an unusual grid-like formation. Today the remains of Priene, 15km from Söke,
are spectacularly set halfway up a marble cliff in the Samsun/Mykale Mountains, and the ancient city is a considerable
draw for tourists in the vicinity. Main sites include a theatre originally built in the 4th century B.C. and the stunning
view from the ruins of the acropolis at the city's summit.

Dalaman (Dalyan & Sarigerme)

Province: Mugla

Region: Aegean

Airport: Dalaman (27km and 15km respectively)

Transfer Time: 25-40 minutes

The Dalaman region is an area of breathtaking natural beauty, with lush cotton fields, fragrant orange groves, and a
smattering of fascinating ancient sites. Although Dalaman is known primarily for its international airport which serves
some of Turkey’s most popular resorts, the area itself is gaining popularity as a tourist destination. This popularity is
set to increase with the arrival of impressive holiday villages in Sarigerme and soon to be opened golf courses in the
near vicinity.

Dalyan is home to the endangered Caretta Caretta species of turtle and accordingly the creatures have become a symbol of
this attractive little resort. The town itself is situated on the stretch of water that connects Köycegiz Lake to the sea,
and it is by means of this waterway that Iztuzu Beach is reached via a regular boat service. The sandy beach is a nesting
ground for turtles and as such is a protected area with no building allowed. Dalyan has managed to retain much of its
unspoilt charm and ancient Lycian rock tombs overlook the resort giving it a sense of history and character. Tourist
facilites include a number of predominantly small hotels, a range of restaurants, shops and a handful of bars.

Despite being a relative newcomer, Sarigerme is quickly establishing itself as a popular family holiday destination, with
a handful of large, mostly self-contained hotels and one or two more traditional pensions. The actual centre of Sarigerme
is pretty nondescript, but with plans afoot to turn this area into a golfers paradise, it is unlikely to remain so for
much longer. The ancient city of Physilis was once located here and although the ruins are mostly buried in sand, those
determined enough can find city walls and the remains of a Byzantine church.

Things to Do In and Around Dalaman:

Once a significant trading port, the ancient city of Kaunos is accessed by way of a short boat ride from the
resort centre. It is said to have been founded by Kaunos, the son of Miletus, exiled for having had an incestuous
relationship with his twin sister. The city was part of the Kingdom of Rhodes, Bergama and then later the Roman Empire
although it lost its importance as the harbour filled with silt. Remnants of these ancient times overlook the stunning
Lake Sü and include an impressive 33-row theatre, a church, roman bath and some city walls.

The Mudbaths of Dalyan have unsurprisingly become one of the areas top attractions, with countless tourists
travelling from the neighbouring resorts of Marmaris and Fethiye to enjoy this unusual experience. The sulphur-rich baths
are credited with alleviating the symptoms of rheumatic and dermatalogical conditions, and some even claim that the waters
will make you look younger, although this has not been scientifically proven!

With its picturesque lake-side setting, the town of Köycegiz is certainly worth an inland detour. Still largely
untouched by tourism, the main industry here is farming, with citrus fruit, olives, honey and cotton being among the main
produce. A stroll around the shore of the lake is a must, as is stopping for a refreshing glass of local brew in one of
the several tea gardens.

Adventure-seekers will enjoy rafting on the Dalaman River. The rapids here are suitable for beginners and more
experienced rafters with a difficulty ratings ranging from 1 to 5 (depending on the time of year and the course taken).

The Dalyan Delta is haven for wildlife and has thus become a popular spot for Birdwatching. Click here for a
list of species commonly seen in the area.

Ekincik is a beautiful little cove and popular stopping point on the famous ”Blue Cruise” route. Now accessible
by road direct from Köycegiz, there are a couple of small hotels here, but Ekincik is still more of a retreat than a
resort.

Although there is nothing of real significance to see in Ortaca, the town is the transport hub of the area and
those wishing to travel further afield can find a greater number of bus connections from here. The “Stork Garden” at Ley
Restaurant in the village of Ok;ular is an interesting diversion. Visiting storks make the trees here their home for the
summer and they are fascinating to watch.

Shopping facilities in Turkey are excellent and the Dalaman area is no exception. There are a number of Weekly
Markets, the largest of which takes place in Köycegiz on a Monday. Dalyan also boasts a sizeable Saturday market and
Sarigerme has a smaller, village market on a Sunday.

Bryony Villas provide the very best in luxury apartments in and arond Oludeniz beach resort. The accommodation, rooms, furnishings, equipment, swimming pool, furniture, building, apartment, rental apartment, Turkey rental villa, property in Turkey, overseas property, rent apartment, Turkey villas, holiday villas, rent, villas, rentals, rent a villa in Turkey, book a Turkish holiday, villa online, holidaying in Turkey, Villa holidays in Turkey, Turkey villa holidays, luxury villa holiday rentals, villa accommodation, self catering villa, olu deniz, oludeniz, ovacik, kayakoy, kaya village, hisaronu, fethiye. Those wishing to explore the stunning surroundings on foot will not be disappointed as there are several good
trekking routes to choose from. A popular choice is the particularly scenic path from Gökbel to Iztuzu which takes about
two to three hours to complete. A trek along the Kapidag Peninsula gives an ideal opportunity to explore the largely
unexcavated ancient ruins of Kyra, Lissia and Lydia. There is some debate as to how far these settlements date back though
there is evidence of Carian, Lycian and Byzantine architecture.

Also Within Reach:

- Fethiye: The scenic harbour town of Fethiye lies an hour and a half drive eastwards.

- Marmaris: A cosmopolitan resort with an attractive marina, a wide selection of shops and vibrant nightlife.
